AS-44
DESCRIPTION:
AS-44 is a 100% active, powdered, heavy duty hot-soak cleaner and stripper for ferrous metals. It is composed of highly alkaline builders, a special "chelating" agent that removes paint and helps prevent flash re-rusting, and biodegradable emulsifiers for enhanced cleaning and prolonged vat life. AS-44 has a pH of 13.0 at various use concentrations. PURPOSE: AS-44 rapidly removes grease, oil, dirt, sludge, loose carbon deposits, engine varnish, light rust, engine enamels and paints from ferrous metals. This makes it a natural for automotive repair shops, oilfield equipment rebuilders and maintenance crews, machine shops, diesel shops, remanufacturers, compressor rebuilders, etc. (DO NOT use on aluminum, galvanized or Babbitt metal!) AS-44 is highly effective and economically priced which makes it an excellent product for hot-soak vat operations. DIRECTIONS FOR USE: For HOT SOAK CLEANING, AS-44 may be used at concentrations of 8 ounces to 3 pounds per gallon of water. For light to medium duty cleaning, use at a rate of 8 to 12 ounces per gallon. For heavy duty cleaning and stripping use at a rate of 3/4 to 2 pounds per gallon. Normally AS-44 will be used at a rate of one and a half pounds per gallon of water. For most operations a vat temperature of 180°F is recommended. However, depending on the soil, the surface, and the cleaning time, our representatives may recommend temperatures ranging from 150°F to 200°F. WHEN CHARGING TANKS: 1. Water in tank should be warmed to 80°F - 90°F (lukewarm). 2. Pour AS-44 slowly into tank while stirring to prevent lumping. Avoid splashing; wear rubber gloves and eye protection when blending. 3. Stir well before applying more heat. 4. Never add AS-44 to hot tank solutions. Cool tank and add slowly using a shovel or other long handled device. ADDITION TO A HOT SOLUTION MAY RESULT IN TANK BOIL-OVER. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR IMPROVED VAT LIFE: 1. Skim off any grease or oil that collects at the surface of the vat. 2. Periodically add water to the vat to replace that which is lost by evaporation. This prevents over concentration of the cleaner and will maintain proper conditions for good cleaning. 3. "Sweeten" the vat as needed by the addition of make-up AS-44 to replace that lost by drag out and reaction with soil. How often a tank is "sweetened" and how much is added will vary from business to business. However, the following method works in many cases. Approximately once a week, add makeup AS-44 at a rate of 1/2 ounce per gallon of water in the vat. ADVANTAGES: 1. Specially designed for a long solution life, despite contamination. 2. This product is 100% active, but still economically priced. 3. Contains alkaline activated chelaters which remove light rust, paint, and help prevent flash re-rusting. 4. Especially designed for hot vat operations. 5. All emulsifiers and wetting agents are biodegradable. PRECAUTIONS:
DANGER: POISON CAUSES BURNS, HARMFUL OR FATAL IF SWALLOWED Contains sodium hydroxide (caustic soda, lye). Avoid contact with skin, eyes, or clothing. Avoid breathing dust or mist. DO NOT SWALLOW. When handling, wear face shield or goggles, rubber gloves, and protective clothing. While mixing add slowly to surface of water and avoid splattering. Always add to lukewarm water. Generates heat on dissolving and may cause boiling of hot water. DO NOT use to clean aluminum, galvanized, brass, bronze, or Babbitt. They may be damaged and deactivate the chelaters. Use with good ventilation. IF SWALLOWED: NEVER GIVE ANYTHING BY MOUTH TO AN UNCONSCIOUS PERSON. DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. Give large quantities of water. If available, give several glasses of milk. If vomiting occurs spontaneously, keep airway clear. SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION IMMEDIATELY. EYE CONTACT: Immediately flush with plenty of cold water for at least 15 minutes. Call a doctor immediately. Object is to flush material out immediately, then SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION. Washing eyes within 1 minute is essential to achieve maximum effectiveness. Hold lids apart to ensure flushing of the entire surface. SKIN CONTACT: Brush off excess. Immediately wash contaminated areas with plenty of water for 15 minutes. SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION IMMEDIATELY for burns and any serious exposure. If irritation persists on any type of exposure, SEE A DOCTOR. DO NOT apply salves or ointments for 24 hours to affected areas unless directed otherwise by medical personnel. FOR CONTAMINATED CLOTHING: Remove immediately and wash before reuse. Discard footwear which cannot be decontaminated. Keep container closed when not in use. Store in a cool, dry area away from acids. Wash thoroughly after handling or contact-exposure can cause burns which are not immediately painful or visible. Consult MSDS for more detailed information on the safe handling of this product. FOR COMMERCIAL OR INDUSTRIAL USE ONLY! KEEP OUT OF THE REACH OF CHILDREN! HOW TO MEASURE A VAT To measure a vat you will need to multiply its: L(length) ft. x W(width) ft. x D*(depth) ft x 7.48 = (gallons of working solution) or L(length) in. x W(width) in. x D(depth) in. - 1728 x 7.48 = (gallons of working solution) * To arrive at the proper depth measurement, you must measure from the top of the working solution inside the vat to the bottom of the vat, NOT from the top of the vat itself. Do not put tape measure inside of vat. Measure from the OUTSIDE ONLY. TO DETERMINE THE AMOUNT OF VAT PRODUCT THE CUSTOMER WILL NEED Gallons of Working Solution x Recommended Product Concentration = Product Quantity For Example: Recommended product concentration is 1 pound per gallon solution: Vat measurement: 5 x 3 x 2 = 224.40 gallons x 1 = 225 pounds of product Recommended product concentration is 1'h pounds per gallon of solution: Vat measurement: 5 x 3 x 2 = 224.40 gallons x 1.5 = 338 pounds of product Warranty and Liability Disclaimer The above information and recommendations concerning this product are based upon laboratory tests and field use experience; however, since conditions of actual use are beyond our control, any recommendations are made without warranty, expressed or implied. Manufacturer's and seller's sole obligation shall be to replace the portion of the product shown to be defective.
